MALAWI PROJECT

OUR CURRENT PROJECT

We are currently working to improve the latrine system at the Chitala school, located 10 kilometers south of Salima. With a student population of 1,010, the school only has six pit latrines. The area’s poor soil texture and rainy season makes it so the latrines collapse every school year, posing sanitation and health issues for the school. This community needs a better model of building permanent latrine structures.

Our club plans on researching different options for types of latrines, and evaluating the feasibility during our assessment trip this coming year. After the assessment trip, we plan on building two of the newly designed latrines during our implementation trips. Most importantly, we will take time to educate and train the community on sanitation practices as well as the construction and maintenance of the new latrines. Our latrines will serve as a demonstration for all future construction work, which will hopefully extend beyond the scope of the school, addressing the health issues that the people of Chitala face.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

Our club has researched different options for types of latrines, and evaluated the feasibility during our virtual assessment trip in March 2022. After analyzing the information provided to us from the assessment trip, we plan on building two blocks of newly designed latrines during our implementation trip which we hope to take in May 2023.

Most importantly, we will take time to talk with the community on sanitation practices and maintenance of the new latrines. Our latrines will serve as a demonstration for all future construction work, which will hopefully extend beyond the scope of the school, addressing the health issues that the people of Chitala face.

We are raising funds to cover the many costs associated with our project. These costs include:

  • Costs for purchase material and supplies for our projects

  • Contractor fee for building

  • Multiple travel expenses and transportation in Malawi

Estimated Budget:

Cost per latrine block: $15,000 ($3,000 per latrine stall)

Estimated travel costs: $16,000
